Ingredients

1 Cup Molasses 

1 Cup Butter-Flavored Shortening

1 Cup Sugar

1 Large Egg

½ Tsp Vanilla

2 Tsps Baking Soda

½ Cup Hot Water

¾ Tsp Ground Cloves

3 Tsps Cinnamon

1 Tsp Salt

Tsps Ground Ginger

6 Cups Flour

Directions

1. Heat the Molasses 

Preheat your oven to 375°F. In a medium saucepan, combine molasses and shortening over medium heat. Simmer for 2-5 minutes, stirring vigorously, until it thickens into a sticky sauce that coats the spoon.

2. Mix Wet Ingredients

In a stand mixer, whisk sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth. In a separate bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water, then add to the mixer along with cloves, cinnamon, salt, and ginger.

3. Incorporate the Molasses

Pour the hot molasses mixture into the stand mixer and beat until well combined.

4. Add Flour and Shape Dough

Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut out gingerbread men shapes and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets.

5. Bake

Bake the cookies for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are firm. Allow them to cool completely before decorating.

6. Decorate

Get creative with icing, sprinkles, and candies to bring your gingerbread men to life.

Notes

1. Soft vs. Crunchy

For softer cookies, slightly underbake and let them cool on the tray. For crispy cookies, bake a little longer.
