Summary

Cleaning cast iron is easier than you think. Here are three easy ways to keep your cast iron in top shape, so you can enjoy cooking with it for years to come.

Ingredients

Cast Iron Cookware

Corse Sea Salt

Flaxseed Oil

Directions

1. For a Skillet That’s Not Too Dirty

Pour in a bit of oil. Then, use a paper towel or dish rag to rub the oil around, wiping out any food pieces. And, you’re done!

2. If it’s a Bit More Dirty

Make a salt scrub. Sprinkle in some coarse sea salt, then lightly scrub with a a paper towel or dish rag to scrape up tougher food pieces. Finish it off by rubbing the pan with oil, and it’s clean & ready to use!

3. For Food That’s Really Stuck On

Grab a chainmail scrubber and pour some warm water into the skillet. Then, scrub away, making sure to scrub off all the stuck-on food.

Rinse the pan and dry it thoroughly with a paper towel or dish rag. Then, set it over a high flame. The extra heat speeds up evaporation, drives off moisture, and prevents your pan from rusting.

Finally, season the skillet with oil, and you’re good to go!

Notes

1. Seasoning Your Cast Iron

Regular seasoning is key to maintaining the non-stick surface of your cast iron. After cleaning, apply a thin layer of flaxseed oil to the skillet's surface, including the handle, then heat it in the oven at 375°F for an hour. This process helps to build up a protective, non-stick coating.

2. Avoid Soap

While a little soap won’t ruin your skillet, it’s best to avoid using it regularly, as it can strip the pan’s seasoning. Stick to natural methods like the salt scrub for everyday cleaning.

3. Storing Your Cast Iron

Always store your cast iron dry and in a dry place. Avoid stacking it with other pans to prevent scratching the seasoning. Placing a paper towel inside the skillet can help absorb any residual moisture.
